Proper Use and Misuse of Acids

What is the proper way to handle acid?

Proper Use and Misuse of Acids

We know that acids produce hydrogen ions when dissolved in water. However, not all acids have the same properties. Some acids—especially organic acids—do not dissociate completely in water; instead, they dissociate partially. That is, not all of their molecules produce hydrogen ions. For this reason, such acids are called weak acids. On the other hand, mineral acids dissociate completely in water, producing hydrogen ions from all of their molecules; therefore, they are called strong acids.

Introduction
Many of us do not know why there is intense burning after a wasp or scorpion sting. The main reason is that the venom of these creatures contains a harmful chemical called histamine. In such cases, the ointments used usually contain vinegar or baking soda, which act as acidic or alkaline substances. They react with each other and neutralize the effect of the venom, thereby reducing the burning sensation.
Often, after eating heavy foods such as polao or biryani, we drink soft drinks. There is a scientific reason for this. For digestion, our stomach requires a certain amount of hydrochloric acid. When this acid level is balanced, digestion proceeds normally. Since soft drinks are slightly acidic, consuming them in limited amounts may help with digestion.

Misuse of Acids, Laws, and Social Impact

Sadly, there are some cruel and vengeful individuals in society who commit horrific crimes such as acid attacks to satisfy their anger. Acid attacks cause severe burns to the human body and permanently disfigure the face. As a result, victims often become socially isolated and, in many cases, mentally traumatized.
Research shows that most victims of acid violence are school- or college-going girls or housewives. This leads to the disruption of promising students’ education and brings extreme suffering to entire families. Therefore, increasing social awareness to prevent acid violence is extremely important.

Punishment for Acid Attacks

Acid throwing is a serious and inhumane crime. In Bangladesh, under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 1995, the punishment for acid attacks can range from life imprisonment to the death penalty. An acid attacker not only destroys another person’s life but also exposes themselves to severe legal consequences. Hence, it is essential to control the easy availability of acids and to make the general public aware of the devastating consequences of this crime.

What are the safety precautions for acid?

Hydrochloric acid is naturally produced in the stomach to digest food. However, when the level of this acid increases excessively for any reason, it is known as acidity. Excessive consumption of spicy foods, acidic beverages, soft drinks, or drinking fruit juice on an empty stomach can increase acidity.
According to experts, excessive intake of onions, garlic, spicy foods, and chocolate increases acidity. In addition, stress, irregular eating habits, lack of adequate sleep, and certain bacterial infections can also cause acidity. Therefore, acidity can be controlled through moderate and balanced dietary habits.
Some foods are alkaline in nature and help reduce acidity, such as broccoli, spinach, Malabar spinach, carrots, beetroot, lettuce, mushrooms, potatoes, and cauliflower. In addition, lentils, soy milk, almond milk, goat milk products, herbal tea, green tea, and ginger tea play an effective role in reducing acidity.

Foods and Fruits That Contain Acids

Fruits such as lemon, orange, apple, guava, and Indian gooseberry (amla) contain various types of organic acids that are beneficial to our body. Among them, vitamin C (ascorbic acid) boosts immunity and helps heal wounds. Vinegar (acetic acid) is used in preserving pickles. Lactic acid, found in yogurt and borhani, aids digestion and is especially beneficial after heavy meals.

From the above discussion, we learn that the proper use of acids can bring benefits to our lives, while their misuse causes severe social and personal harm. Along with enforcing laws, increasing social awareness is essential to prevent acid violence. If we all become aware of this issue and help make others aware as well, it will be possible to build a safe and humane society.
